

A Shadow in the Corner by Mary Elizabeth Braddon Gaskell is one of my favourite writers and I had previously read North and South and Mary Barton but this tale (along with her other ‘tales’) is so different from her novels and it was a wonderful story to read.ĥ. It features dramatic organ music, beautiful women, and an absolutely fantastic final line. It’s difficult to keep up with in parts but it is an excellent ghost story. The Old Nurse’s Story by Elizabeth Gaskell It’s an odd story that involves a pair of binoculars, a haunting past, and some curious men.Ĥ. I was introduced to this story a couple of months ago by one of my professors and I haven’t read the rest of the collection yet which is entitled A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories. The final story by James on this list is A View From a Hill. What more could you ask for in a ghost story? It’s a perfect Halloween read! It involves ghosts, hidden pseudo-scientific notes, and a good dose of death.
